The “Traces of the Wall Tour” will take us along leftover traces of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989) from Potzdamer Platz to the East-Side Gallery. This hated symbol of the Cold War divisision was also known as “the Iron Curtain” and sealed West-Berlin from East Germany. After the fall of the Wall in 1989 the first impulse was to get rid of it all and the break down started soon with the same “Grundlichkeit” the Wall was erected. Today, a long slow healing scar meanders itself through the city center. Luckily there are still some interesting remainings preserved. Next to the Potzdamer Platz an old Watch Tower, as well as a few sections of the Wall, survived. We will follow a cobblestone trail to the Topography of Terror an outdoor museum where 200 meters of the Wall is preserved. From there the cobble stone route brings us to the border crosspoint Check Point Charlie where the Cold War almost ‘defrosted’ in the 1961 confrontation between the Russian and American armies. A Memorial for Peter Fechter is a remembrance of his death, at the age of just 18 years, caused by sharp shooting border guards when he tried to escape over the Wall to West-Berlin. Next interesting spot of our route is the Luisenstaedtischer Kanal, a former canal that developed into a green strip for the densely populated districts of Kreuzberg and Mitte. The endpoint of our photographic journey is the East-Side Gallery, a 1.3 km long preserved section of the Berlin Wall. In 1990 the East side of the Wall was painted by artist from all over the world.
During this tour I will give some background information and essential instructions of how to capture the best photos of these highlights. We will talk about technical basic skills like: How to use Shutterspeed, Aperture, Iso and Depth of field? Other topics are: Composition techniques, Colors (and Black and White), HDR, Panoramas, Auto- and Manual Focus, Lenses, Tripods and Flash photography.
On top of this we will explore more creative aspects like “seeing the light” and how to look at subjects in different ways to unlock your inner artist. The tour will be an inspirational experience and give you all the tools for further photographic explorations on your own.
There is individual attention for each participant. The lenght of the guided photography walking tours is 7-8 km so put on your walking shoes. A drop of rain is no reason to cancel the tours. Everyone with a camera (even a phonecamera) is welcome, from beginner to more advanced photographers. For the evening tours a tripod will give much better results.
Starting point of the “Traces of the Wall Tour” is the Potsdamer Platz at the OldTraffic Lights Clock.
